FTMN Quickie: Suicide Squad Extended Cut

It’s time for yet another FTMN Quickie as I finally got around to watching the extended edition of Suicide Squad that I bought on sale at Target for $10 back shortly after it was first released on home video. I hadn’t seen it since it first came out in theaters and if you recall my review, I was generally positive on the film with the exception of the villain and the overall arc of the plot. Watching it again had me noticing the flaws in the film much more, but when the characters are good, they are fantastic, and that’s enough to keep me engaged without rolling my eyes too hard every time Enchantress comes on screen.

As for the changes, there aren’t a ton of them in the extended cut and most of them revolve around Harley and Joker flashbacks. There’s one flashback that’s entirely new to the film and another one that gets a few more details fleshed out. In fact, nearly every addition to the film is just a minor little moment that adds an extra character beat to one or more of the Suicide Squad members. And since the characters are what drew me into this film in the first place, pretty much every new scene was a welcome addition in my eyes. It wasn’t enough to get me on board with Leto’s vision of the Joker, but I do think the extended edition improved on the theatrical edition. Unfortunately, time and rewatching the film itself wasn’t as kind to the movie as a whole and where the film falters detracted quite a bit more than it did the first time I saw it. It’s still an ok movie, but it’s not much more than that, even with the additional scenes. Until next time, this has been Bubbawheat for Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights.
